Your resume is the first impression you make on a potential employer. You want your resume to stand out, but be sure to provide expected information in addition to highlighting your talents, skills and experience. In addition to the resume writing tips provided below, the Vermont Department of Labor offers resume writing resources and Career Resource Centers throughout the state to assist you with writing an impressive resume.
When applying to a State of Vermont position, you will have the opportunity to apply with or without a resume. You are encouraged to provide a resume and cover letter. Although not generally a requirement, for professional level positions, many hiring managers do expect to see both a cover letter and resume.
*The application system will only accommodate one unique attachment to your application. Therefore, if you are providing a cover letter and resume, you will need to combine them into one document to be attached. The document or file name should be less than 20 characters long. If your document or file name exceeds the character limit, you may experience errors or be unable to attach it to your application. Attached cover letters and resumes should be in a .doc or .pdf format whenever possible.
Tailor your resume to the position for which you are applying. Review the job opening description. Choose keywords that relate to the job requirements and get rid of unnecessary information. Your resume should be brief and to the point.
Provide information such as personal contact information, work experience/history education, training, licenses and certifications and other relevant job skills. Do not include personal information such as marital or family status, personal health condition, ethnicity, gender, date of birth, and social security number.
Personal Information: Include your name, complete address and phone number with area code at the top of your resume. Private data should not be included or attached to your resume.
Work Experience, Education & Training: Because the State of Vermont requires an online application which should be completed in its entirety and includes your details regarding your work history and education, the resume is your opportunity to highlight your credentials. Summarize your career and accomplishments and identify your areas of expertise.
Other Information: You may want to include additional information that highlights additional skills and abilities.
- Special accomplishments, awards, and honors you have received.
- Languages you are fluent in.
- Professional memberships and volunteer work, particularly if related to the position for which you are applying.
Presentation: Keep your resume format structured and not crammed with information or disjointed. Proof read your resume for proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. Choose a simple font and use black ink. Don’t use graphics and symbols. Avoid using all capital letters.
Cover Letter: Many hiring managers want to see a cover letter that summarizes your interest in the position and highlights what you have to offer the employer. This is not a repeat of your resume, but an opportunity to showcase your strengths.
