Maintenance and operational work at a state airport. This position is responsible for maintaining the airport infrastructure by performing routine and preventive maintenance activities involving runways, taxiways, stormwater systems, parking lots, and building facilities. Work is performed under the general direction of a regional supervisor. |

Assists with and/or implements all Aviation Maintenance Worker I Job Responsibilities including:
Responsible for the maintenance and repair to the state's airport infrastructure to include, line striping, patch potholes and surfaces, seal pavement cracks, ditching, grading, sweeping, mowing, repairing runway shoulders, cutting trees and brush, cleaning drains plowing and ice removal. Monitors work and approves contractor invoices. Responsible for daily and weekly airport inspections to maintain FAA compliance. Operates medium and/or heavy equipment during summer, and performs winter activities including operation of snow removal equipment, to keep airports in safe operating condition year around. Responsible for performing daily preventive maintenance and inspections on vehicles and equipment prior to operating. Monitors parking lot operations and enforces compliance specific to airport safety and security practices, and airport safety inspections. Routinely inspects airport and equipment for hazardous conditions and administers corrections. Issues and files Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) as appropriate. Responds to actual and potential emergencies and training for them, and subject to on call status for all major emergencies. Serves in a supplemental role in assisting volunteer or contracted firefighting personnel in operating firefighting and rescue equipment, administering first aid to victims, shutting down aircraft engines and systems during emergencies. Orders and receives parts, materials, and supplies from vendors. Ensures proper documentation is received with hazardous materials and current Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available to the users of the materials. Verifies and code bills for payment. Performs basic computer work, keeping record of time, materials used, equipment usage, and fuel used.
Public relations with users and general public at the airport. Performs related duties as required.
Administers these additional duties as an Aviation Maintenance Worker II:
Completes occupational hazard inspections including facilities and equipment. Monitors tenant activity for compliance and addresses findings. Assists with search and rescue missions involving aircraft. Balances fuel logs and orders fuel. Trains fixed based operators (FBO's) airport managers on airport rules, regulations and operations. |
Environmental Factors |
Work is performed both in a facility and primarily in the field. Duties require exposure to extreme outdoor weather. An incumbent must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their work schedule and must be reachable by phone. An employee must be able to use tools and lift materials commonly used in routine maintenance work. Normal dangers associated with work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and responding to accidents, emergencies and natural disasters are present. May be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required. Travel throughout the state to various airports may be required. Stress may be involved in negotiating and obtaining compliance with contracts, tenants and users. |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities |
Considerable knowledge of the operation, use and maintenance of medium and heavy equipment used in transportation maintenance or construction activities.
Considerable knowledge of safety precautions and the handling of hazardous materials storage and disposal procedures.
Working knowledge of purchase and requisition procedures.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in airport maintenance and operation and associated federal and state laws, rules, and regulations.
Knowledge and interpretation of weather and weather reporting systems
Knowledge of operation and components of fuel dispensing systems
Knowledge of FAR Parts 139 and CFR 1542
Knowledge of airport electrical systems
Knowledge of the Notice to Airman system
Ability to maintain and/or operate equipment and vehicles required to perform year-round maintenance activities, and ability to operate fire / rescue equipment used at airports.
Ability to perform basic computer operations including data entry into the Vermont Maintenance Activity Tracking Systems (VMATS).
Ability to keep records of equipment usage, fuel used, time distribution, and materials involved in assigned role.
Ability to understand, communicate, and carry out oral and written instructions and to communicate with others effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to safely use laboring and basic hand and power tools. |
Minimum Qualifications |
High School diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of transportation maintenance or construction experience INCULDING BOTH one season or more of operating a snow plow with or without wings AND six months or more of operating medium or heavy equipment, such as graders, rollers, and backhoes.
OR
One (1) year as an Airport Maintenance Worker I.
