Class Definition

Engineering work at a basic level for the Agency of Transportation. Duties involve design, technical support, and construction oversight of simple engineering projects under close supervision. Duties include the collection, analysis, and review of engineering data to be used in the preparation and evaluation of engineering design and construction plans and specifications for disciplines including, but not limited to, Roadway, Traffic, Structural, Hydraulic, Geotechnical, Environmental, Materials, and Construction Management.

Examples of Work

Under the guidance and review of a higher authority employee, duties
include, but are not limited to: Performs site visits, analyzes photographs, drawings, and maps to confirm the engineering approach or scope of projects as well as the overall project constraints. Performs basic calculations by hand and using software such as Mathcad and Microsoft Excel, ensuring adherence to appropriate codes and standards for design and construction. Assists with the development and review of project plans using 3D modeling and design software. Assists in forecasting design and construction time frames using scheduling software. Assists in research, collection, and analysis of data. Calculates, checks, and adjusts quantity calculations for practical and budgetary purposes. Performs field reconnaissance and site investigations, documents observations, and assists with preparing draft recommendations for forensic or future construction projects. Performs post processing and review of laboratory test results for conformance to material and plan specifications. Assists with writing project specifications. Serves as a Construction Office Engineer and/or Inspector on a construction project. Communicates with and takes direction from team members.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in both office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Developing knowledge of transportation engineering and construction principles and practices as used in planning, design, construction, reconstruction, or rehabilitation of a variety of transportation projects.

Developing ability to read and understand engineering plans and specifications for construction by assisting in the review and analysis of project plans, ensuring consistency with policies, statutes, regulations, rules, and Vermont's Standard Specifications for Construction.

Developing knowledge of computer aided drafting, design, and information modeling by assisting with developing project plans, and construction oversight using state of the art modeling software, including GPS data collection software and survey equipment for construction layout and inspection.

Developing ability to design field investigations to appropriately characterize various materials.

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Ability to understand technical information.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field.

OR

Associates degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND two (2) years of experience in engineering OR licensure as an Engineer Intern.

OR

College senior in the final year of a bachelor’s degree program in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field.
