Class Definition

Consultative, technical and analytical work involving engineering geology for the Agency of Transportation. AOT Geologist III is the highest level in the geologist series. Duties involve design and review of rock slope projects, asset management of rock slopes, administration of approved aggregate sources, development of strategic plans and budgets for the various geological programs. Duties may include administrative and general supervisory work. Work involves independence in assuring completion of work assignments, and accountability for work performed by lower level geologist and the Aggregate Unit. Acts as Agency’s subject matter expert in areas relating to transportation geology. Position differs from a lower level geologist in the number and complexity of assigned responsibilities and level of professional judgement and independent decision making exercised. Work is performed under general direction of the Geotechnical Engineering Manager.

Examples of Work

Under minimal supervision, oversees the Agency’s Rock Slope Program, including review of design, specifications, and geological recommendations for rock slope stabilization projects. Develops a strategic plan for management of the Rock Slope Program, utilizing the Agency’s rockfall hazard rating system to inform programming decisions. Lead responder to emergency rockfall events on short notice and provides technical assistance to assess the current condition of the rock slope.  Performs assessments and prepares site visit memos and reports documenting findings and observations.  Acts as Geotechnical Lead for rock slope projects utilizing consultants, including review of proposals, reports, and invoices.   Organizes and performs field inspection and review of construction submittals pertaining to geological items. Manages the processes involved in approving aggregate sources, including performing petrographic analyses and optical examination, as well as reviewing processes and procedures involved with running the program. Provides guidance and technical expertise relating to equipment and testing practices used to sample rock and test aggregates.  Assists in the preparation and management of consultant services contracts. Develops strategic plan and budget for the geology and aggregate units. May attend and testify at Act 250 and other public hearings and meetings. Provides leadership, guidance, oversight, motivation, and supervision of lower level geologist and Aggregate Unit Supervisor. Performs related duties as required.

Environmental Factors

Duties are largely performed in office and field setting. Incumbents should possess private means of transportation. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain, up and down ladders, and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular hours will likely be required, including attendance at state and national conferences, committee meetings, and public meetings. Strong and conflicting opinions may be encountered. An incumbent may experience frequent pressure deadlines.

Advanced knowledge of engineering geology.

Advanced knowledge of field and laboratory techniques used in geologic investigations and geologic mapping techniques.

Advanced knowledge of drilling, blasting, and quarrying methods.

Advanced knowledge of computer uses and potential in data management and program planning.

Advanced knowledge of the regional geology and Agency’s source approval program.

Advanced knowledge of GIS concepts, software, and of geospatial editing tools and procedures.

Considerable knowledge of planning principles and procedures.

Considerable knowledge of budget preparation practices and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering AND six (6) years or more of geology related work experience INCLUDING two (2) years or more of experience in a supervisor capacity.

OR

Six (6) years as an AOT Geologist II INCLUDING two (2) years or more of experience in a supervisor capacity.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a transportation field
