Class Definition | Planning, development, and managerial work involving direction of a team within the Department of Education. The team is organized to direct and support educational transformation within a segment of the education community or throughout education using a specific set of resources. Extensive interaction occurs with the State Board of Education, education leaders, administrators, legislators, and other federal and state officials. The incumbent reports to the Division Director. |
Examples of Work | Coordinates a variety of special projects requiring cross-divisional expertise or collaboration with entities beyond the Department. Maintains up to date statistics and other data required to assess the performance and effectiveness of the schools and/or department. Researches and analyses collected data, maintaining thorough and current knowledge of trends and developments in all areas affecting programs administered or overseen by the Department. Based on changes in conditions and circumstances affecting populations served, or entities regulated, by the Department, develops revisions of, or proposals for new, policies to address such situations which require interdepartmental or interagency cooperation and consultation. Plans, assigns, directs, and reviews the work activities of staff, technicians and others. Reviews and adjusts staff allocations and assignments as necessary to maintain project schedules. Reviews all work performed by unit staff to ensure its correctness and compliance with law, policy and procedures. Directs a number of field studies and analyses, identifies improvement needs and prepares improvement programs where warranted. Provides coordination and liaison with other Divisions within the Department, plus representatives of the Federal and local schools as necessary, evaluates staff training needs and identifies appropriate training programs. Plans and implements professional development programs as well as communicates the Department's vision and goals to staff. Other related work is performed as necessary. |
Environmental Factors | Normal office working conditions generally prevail. Incumbent must be able to interact, work, and deal with Department staff, educators, state, federal, and local officials, and the general public. Evening and weekend work may be required. Considerable travel is necessary for which private means of transportation must be available |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | Considerable knowledge of one or more educational or technical specialties of the assigned division. Considerable knowledge of the field of education in general and awareness of developments and programs in other jurisdictions. Considerable knowledge and skill in planning, developing, and coordinating programs and initiatives. Ability to interact effectively and work with educators, officials, and community members in a collaborative way. Ability to supervise effectively. Ability to prepare reports of considerable complexity. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. |
Minimum Qualifications | Master's degree in education, public administration, or related field AND five (5) years or more of experience in education or human services, INCLUDING one (1) year or more with planning, policy, program administration or a program evaluation role AND two (2) years or more of supervisory experience. |
