The Public Safety Communication Supervisor is responsible for working on the State of Vermont’s public safety wireless (two-way) land mobile radio communications systems.  The purpose of these systems is to support the two-way radio and backhaul needs for the Department of Public Safety and participating agencies, departments, municipal organization, and federal partners.
The Public Safety Communication Supervisor position is a leadership position within the Radio Technology Services organizational structure. The Supervisor works in the office preforming administrative duties and in the field performing technical services. The Supervisor reports directly to the Radio Technology Service Director and works closely with the Director acquiring leadership skills and collaborating on projects, staff growth and process improvements.

Examples of Work

The supervisor is responsible for setting the service schedule for technician services, performs employee training and evaluations, conduct user surveys to ensure users systems are operating properly and meets the business needs of the users, and performs administrative duties associated with operating an enterprise wireless communications program. The supervisor may repair, maintain and make enhancements to any of Vermont statewide communications systems, subsystems including radio consoles, backhaul equipment, mobile and portable radios, and all supporting systems.
Recommends improvements in networks and systems, develops tanning standards for radio technicians and performing other job-related duties.

Environmental Factors

Incumbents must be able to work under hazardous and/or physically demanding conditions (e.g., climbing, balancing, lifting in extreme heat or cold, in rain, snow, poor lighting, poor ventilation, fumes, ice, mud, etc.). Some call-in duty will be required during emergency situations.
Incumbents must be comfortable accessing remote communications locations via 4WD vehicles, snow machines, and track vehicles. Some sites may require access via hiking and snowshoeing over steep terrain.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations as they apply to radio systems and personnel.
Considerable knowledge of radio and electronic circuitry and theory, and antenna propagation.
Considerable knowledge of the principles of microwave and bandwidth management systems.
Ability to analyze and solve communications system related problems using standard test equipment.
Understanding of radio console and computer technology including IP networks.
Ability to acquire additional skills to maintain technical and professional proficiency.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in electronics, telecommunications, or related field AND at least (2) years of experience in telecommunications  technology, including experience with land mobile radio communications systems.
OR
Associates degree in electronics, telecommunications, or related field AND at least four (4) years of experience in telecommunications technology, including experience with land mobile radio communications systems.
OR
Eight (8) years of work experience in telecommunications  technology, including experience with land mobile radio communications systems.

Note: A Federal Communication Commission general class license or equivalent trade license is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Military experience with communications equipment.

Special Requirements

Applicants are subject to a security clearance by the Department of Public Safety.
